Mardiana Ika
Several days ago I got an email from the management of Ika Butoni a.k.a Mardiana Ika (www.ikabutoni.com). It’s an invitation of her fashion show in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, I could not attend it because of the activity in Jakarta.
Ika is a designer from Indonesia that currently run her business in Hong Kong. Therefore she is the only Indonesian designer who attend Hong Kong Fashion Week every season.
Ika claims that the success of her company is due to the great team work, unusual designs that differ from the current trend, and adding accessories as final touches to the finishing of a garment. It’s an exciting process for her team to work in the Butoni ‘fashion kitchen’. Since 2003, Butoni has grown tremendously. With her partner, John Keilman (from Holland), they work with scores of talented staff covering 3 floors, satisfying clients from all over the world. The range now includes a men’s wear collection, with the increasing demands for more designs.
But the most interesting about Ika is her determination to promote the Indonesian fashion. Every year she support Bali Fashion Week (www.balifashionweek.com), an event that put together dozens of Indonesian fashion designers in fashion week that always attended by the international retailers. Frequently she must cover the cost of the event from her pocket personally, because of the minimal support from the sponsors and the government. I hope she could carry on Bali Fashion Week this year. It will be the seventh year.
