Your gutters are an integral part of your home, but you may not even notice them when they are doing their job correctly. Gutters are sturdy and last for a long time, but it can be challenging if you are unsure when the gutters were installed on your house or if they have seen damage in the past. How can you tell when it is time to replace them? Here are 3 signs to keep in mind when you are checking your gutters:
- Cracks or Splits – Ever tried to transport water in a bucket with a leaky bottom? Cracks in your gutters are just as effective when it comes to dealing with rain water! Larger splits will be easier to spot, but check your gutters during a storm as well for signs of smaller cracks. At any size, cracks and splits in your gutters will stop them from doing their job properly and can cause damage to your home or property.
- Peeling Paint – The siding of your house can provide a clue as to whether your gutters are not performing properly. If you see paint that is bubbling or peeling away, the condition of the nearest gutter may be compromised. Likewise, if painted gutters are peeling then this is a sign of needing replacement.
- Pooling Water or Eroding Landscaping – Walk around your home’s exterior to make sure there are no signs of water pooling near the foundation or your landscaping being eroded by water damage. Your gutters should be carrying water away from your house and these signs will alert you to the need for replacement. Avoid potential flooding issues by catching red flags early!
