When someone is looking at countertops, many times they consider granite countertops and marble countertops. Below is a comparison between marble and granite countertops.
Appearance
They are both beautiful countertops. Granite might have a lot of hues that you may not see in marble – green, blue, pink, orange, red, etc., usually in medium or dark shades.
Marble’s patterns are larger. The colors they come in are usually consistent with the veins that run through them.
Durability & Hardness
Granite has a higher hardness than marble. Therefore, it is harder to chip and scratch. Both of the materials are resistant to heat, though you should be with pans that are hot in your kitchen or tools that are hot in your bathroom.
Both types of countertops are very durable. However, this is only true if they’re sealed properly ever 1-2 years. Marble and granite are both porous. So, if they aren’t sealed, liquids are going to get in and stain them.
When the seal’s faded and it’s not replaced, both stones can be marred easily by juice, wine, oil and anything that’s acidic. Otherwise, it can be severely damaged.
Maintenance
Granite needs moderate maintenance as compared with quartz, glass, ceramic tile, laminate or solid surface.
Marble is moderate maintenance to high maintenance. Spills need to be wiped up fast and the counter needs to be sealed regularly.
Now you know some of the facts about granite countertops and marble countertops. Hopefully this will help you make a better decision in which is better for you.
